About :
I am Ritu Dua, a Pune-based qualified Art Therapist.
I was drawn to art therapy because it is an assimilation of my interests: my passionate engagement as an artist and an urge to lend a helping hand to those around me. Getting introduced to art therapy gave a validation to the journey of my life so far. I feel that my artistic expression reflects an open mind and a high level of empathy, and this parallels the way that art therapists work with clients.
The goal of art therapy is not to “teach” art skills, but rather to use art in a therapeutic capacity. Art therapists may instruct clients how to use various art materials so that clients have the freedom to then create whatever they desire. It is natural that many clients become familiar with and adept at using art materials and different methods, but that is not the primary goal. Once a client engages in the art-making process, it often takes just a little nudge for emotions, thoughts, and memories to surface.
I am trained to help the client process emotions and engage in a dialogue with their art and create a personal vocabulary of symbols and meaning. The knowledge that I have gained through her Masters course in Art Therapy has equipped me well to pick up on non-verbal symbols and metaphors that they express through art and the creative process. I design art interventions that aim at mindfulness-based stress reduction not just in clinical anxiety disorders but also for routine day-to-day life. I also integrate traditional healing techniques and contemplative practices into art therapy.
